Title

Morrisville Parkway Access Management Study Recommendations

Crystal Odum, MPO Staff

Body

The MPO partnered with the Town of Morrisville to evaluate a two-mile section of Morrisville Parkway between Davis Drive and NC 54/Chapel Hill Road in Morrisville to make travel safer for vehicles and pedestrians. This four-lane median-divided facility has seen significant traffic volume growth in recent years and has been identified on the Town of Morrisville’s comprehensive plan as a high priority corridor for safety improvements. The corridor has been evaluated for general safety improvements associated with access management. The study examined the median openings, access controls, signage, signalization, intersection operations, multimodal connectivity along and across the corridor, speed limits and traffic calming opportunities culminating in a list of recommendations for implementation that will be presented for information to the TCC, Town of Morrisville Council and the CAMPO Executive Board before a public comment period.  Recommendations (Attachment B) for the Morrisville Parkway corridor are broken into five key areas - at Davis Drive, the Morrisville Elementary school area, the Morrisville Aquatic Center area, the Park West Village area and at NC 54/Chapel Hill Road.

With the support of a Technical Steering Committee (TSC) made up of key stakeholders, the consulting team reviewed key plans and corridor data, held a Stakeholder’s site visit/project area walking tour on September 12th, initiated the first level of public engagement by conducting a 30-day public survey and participating in several in-person local public outreach events on Morrisville Parkway to meet the users of the corridor, explain the study and gather public input about the corridor. Phase 2 of public involvement consisted of a virtual project room which presented corridor improvement recommendations garnered from our work.  The virtual room opened March 4, 2024, and ran through April 7th, 2024, and noted additional public comments and feedback on the recommendations for the corridor.

Activities, study progress and recommendations can be viewed on the Morrisville and CAMPO websites. The final study report that includes the recommendations for both mid- and long-term improvements has been prepared and will be posted for 30 days for public comment May 13th-June 11th.   The report and final recommendations will subsequently be presented to the Town of Morrisville Council (June 24th) and the CAMPO TCC and Executive Board for recommended endorsement in August.
