Body

The Capital Area MPO has concluded a two-year study that developed a methodology for determining the suitability of transit priority bus lanes or other corridor treatments in the CAMPO area, and a priority list of recommended application of these treatments.  This study provides a comprehensive review of best practices for transit priority lanes in peer areas with recommendations evaluating the applicability of transit priority lanes through qualitative analysis and developing and deploying a methodology for evaluating and prioritizing transit priority lane treatments in the CAMPO area.  For this study, R.E.D. refers to potential red painted, right-hand turns, and emergency vehicles and driveway access lanes.

A Notice to Proceed was issued November 2018 to the consulting team of Renaissance Planning, Inc. and WSP, Inc. The team, with input from a Core Technical Team (CTT) made up of regional transportation professionals, completed a peer review of RED lanes applications and other bus priority implementations, conducted a comprehensive review of past and ongoing regional planning efforts preparing an Existing Plans and Studies report, provided an existing conditions analysis via an Existing Conditions Report, finalized a methodology report, an evaluation Toolkit User guide,  ten candidate corridor scoping sheets and delivered the final reports.

The CTT met with the project team in a series of five workshops, providing technical assistance, feedback and reviewing concepts and reports. The project team developed the RED Priority Bus Lane Evaluation Methodology and quantitative tool that can be used to determine potential bus priority lanes in the region.

The study concluded June 30, 2020 on time and on budget and the consultant team is presenting the results, findings and recommendations at the August TCC and Executive Board meetings. This report is submitted for informational purpose with the final presentation of the study including the recommendations. The RED lanes evaluation methodology, evaluation toolkit and a list of potential priority lanes to be considered for the application and all study reports are housed on the CAMPO website.
