US 401 Corridor Study - Final Phase

Kenneth Withrow, MPO Staff

Body

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) has conducted a two-year study covering the US 401 corridor from generally US 421 in Harnett County north to Banks Road in Wake County. The study will determine the ultimate cross-section and alignment of US 401; and will explore interim projects that may lead to that ultimate cross-section and alignment. The study will result in a functional design of the ultimate corridor, and an implementation strategy that recommends short term, long term and policy recommendations that will lead to the successful implementation of US 401.

There has been significant technical analysis and public feedback analysis conducted for the study over the past two years.  The Recommendations & Preferred Alternative Phase (Phase 3) of the study occurred through the summer and fall months of 2023; and culminated in Round Four of public engagement that occurred from October 3 to November 5, 2023.  Updates to the US 401 Corridor Study website, along with public open houses, pop-ups, and public meetings were conducted to receive public review and comments.

The US 401 Corridor Study is in its final phase, which includes the public comment period for the Final Report and Board endorsement action.  CAMPO staff will use this period to present the final report to the local CAMPO member boards within the study for their review and endorsement prior to endorsement by the CAMPO Executive Board.

The US 401 Corridor Study recommendations have been available for a 30-day public review and comment from February 19, 2024 through March 20, 2024. The Executive Board is anticipated to consider endorsement of the US 401 Corridor Study recommendations at its March 20, 2024 meeting. The TCC recommended approval of the US 401 Corridor Study recommendations at its March 7, 2024 meeting.
